MARKS, Milton A. 93 of Kettering, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, November 14, 2010. Milton was born in Cattletsburg, Kentucky on September 9, 1917. His family moved to Dayton in early 1919 and he remained a resident in the Dayton area since then, except for a three-year-plus stint in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II. He entered the travel industry in 1935 when he joined his father and brother Arthur K. Marks at Marks Travel Service in Dayton. Except for the time spent in the Army, he continued with the firm until its sale in 1984, allowing him and his brother to retire. Marks and his late wife, Miriam Siegel Marks, had three children: Rhona Marks Smulian (Andrew Smulian) of Coral Gables Florida; Richard A. Marks (Cindy Bank) of Chevy Chase, Maryland; and Judith Marks Cohen (Jeremy Cohen) of Toronto, Canada; six grandchildren: Daniel Smulian (Rachel Quitkin), Alexander Smuian, Mira Cohen, Samuel Cohen, Tsvi Cohen and Matthew Marks. Along with his children and grandchildren, Milton is survived by his wife, Rita Zalk Cline-Marks, whom he married in 1984 and her children, Julee Chaney and her son, Tevyn, and Meredith Cline. He was a Founder Trustee of the Institute of Certified Travel Agents (ICTA), now called the Travel Institute. He was CEO of ICTA at its founding in 1964 and later served as president and then chairman of its board until his retirement in 1988, when he was elected chairman emeritus. Milton also served in various official elected positions with the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA). He was the ASTA National president in 1962 and 1963. In 1972 ASTA recognized him with its prestigious Travel Agent of the Year Award. In 1990 at the World Travel Congress held in Hamburg, Germany, he was inducted in the Travel Hall of Fame (the third person from Ohio inducted, joining Wilbur and Orville Wright). In 1984 Marks was awarded the honorary degree of doctor of business and industry by the Colorado Board of Regents though Metropolitan State College of Denver. He was cited for his leadership of the first management directed to higher learning supplying continuing education of travel agency executives as a model for tourism throughout the world. In 1961 Marks was decorated by France as a Chevalier de l'ordre du Merite Touristuque. In 1963-1964 he was a member of the Travel Advisory Committee of the U. S. Department of Commerce. He served on the Board of Directors of the 1984 New York World's Fair Corporation. In 1985 he was hailed in the Congressional Record as "Dean of the Travel Industry" commemorating his 50th anniversary in the industry. He was also chairman of the Industry Advisory Committee for the Travel and Tourism at Sinclair Community College. In addition to travel industry roles Marks was active in civic and religious affairs. He served as president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dayton and also was a trustee of its foundation. He also served as president of Temple Israel and was president of its foundation. He served on the board of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. He was also a founding director of the Dayton Region of the National Council of Christians and Jews. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, 1:00 PM at Temple Israel, 130 Riverside Drive. Rabbi Judy Chessin and Rabbi David Sofian officiating. Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Miriam Siegel Marks Fund of the Dayton Jewish Federation Foundation or to The Hospice of Dayton.
